13 End of year exam Total 60 marks End of academic year there will be an exam consisting of 60-100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

16 Definitions  Profession is an occupation whose core element is work, based on the mastery of a complex body of knowledge and skills. Oxford English Dictionary  Profession is a vocation requiring knowledge of some department of learning or science. American College Dictionary

17 Definitions-cont.  Professionalism “constituting those attitude and behaviors that serve to maintain patient interest above physician self-interest. American Board of Internal Medicine  Professionalism is exhibited by one of the ‘’professional character, spirit or methods’’ or the ‘’standing, practice,or methods of a professional as distinguished from an amateur’’. American College Dictionary

18 Definitions-cont. Ottawa conference Professionalism is intrinsically related to the social responsibility of the medical profession. Professionalism has 3 main Discourses/characteristics Individual Interpersonal Societal

19 Definitions-cont.  MEDICINE is a vocation in which a doctor’s knowledge, clinical skills,and judgment are put in the service of protecting and restoring human well- being.  This purpose is realized through a partnership between a patient and doctor, one based on mutual respect,individual responsibility and appropriate accountability.

20 The holy Qura’an and Al-Hadith  The holy Qura’an and Al-Hadith have stated that Muslims has duty to care for the sick and this often referred to ‘‘Medicine of Prophet’.  According to the sayings of the Prophet Mohamed’ peace be upon him’ that ‘Allah has sent a cure for aliment and that it was the duty of Muslim to care of the body and spirit.  This includes improving the quality of care and ensures access of healthcare to every body.

22 The differences between vocation and profession Vocation considered a profession if :. Practicing requires formal education. its members enjoy control over their own training standards.. There is a scholarly journal devoted to its standards.. Its practitioners enjoy relatively high social status. Its practitioners have secured protection from state regulation as well as from market pressures.

23 Concepts of Professionalism  Professionals have codes, guidelines, creeds, oaths, commitments statements, belief statement such as statement on ethics.  Professionals in many professions are licensed, certified and specific initial and advanced education, many require both initial and ongoing testing for admission and maintaining membership.  Support and development outside work environment.

29 Confidentiality  Another barrier to building and maintaining relationships is violating trust.  You must disclose if someone has committed a crime or is planning to hurt themselves or somebody else.  Must develop the ability to keep a confidence.  Do not discuss client information except with relevant health care staff in charge of the patient’s treatment.

30 Punctuality / Time management  Be on time  Do not procrastinate- do tough, important tasks now.  Make a to-do list and use it to prioritize your work.

35 Maintaining competence / life long learning  Learn from supervisor’s constructive criticism.  The best supervisor honestly shares your strengths and weakness with you via performance appraisals.  Must see performance appraisals as an opportunity to learn and grow as professionals.

36 Accountability / Accept responsibility  Develop the ability to accept responsibility (blame) and to share credit.  Honoring the patient/physician relationship  Addressing the health needs of the public  Adhering to medicine’s precepts.  Share credit and your co-workers will be endeared to you.

37 Knowing the language /culture of work  Know and follow your schools’ and institutes’ policies and procedures.  Know the pronunciation, spellings and their usage e.g.: Volunteer or members-not employee service-not job or work.  Guard your tongue  Only use emails ( and internet) for relevant work.

40 Task 2 You are invited to join a national committee responsible for defining professionalism. There are two students on that committee and you are representing King Saud University.”  How would you approach this task ?  What resources would you use to help you in identifying the definition of professionalism?.

41 Task 2 take home message  Sources for defining professionalism might include: literature, published research papers, legal and ethical documents, as well as disciplinary action documents in the hospital, and workplace. These documents are confidential.
