1 What is a region? A region is an area of land that shares some characteristics.

2 There are three kinds of region:
Political Regions: Political Regions: Cultural Regions: Show governments and nations. Include national borders. Borders may change (example: In the war with Mexico, the United States took Mexican territory including California, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona) from Mexico. Show landforms such as mountains, oceans, lakes, rivers, valleys, plains and canyons The rocky mountains are a physical region of North America The Great Lakes are a physical region of North America Show places where people share the same history, language or customs The Caribbean islands share a culture that is a mix of African, European and Native American traditions Latin America is a region where people share the language Spanish

Political Regions North America is made up of 23 countries. The largest country is Canada. The smallest country is St. Regis & Nevis

1. What are the names of the 5 Great Lakes? 2. What Great Lake shares a border with Minnesota? 3. What Great Lake shares a border with New York and Pennsylvania? Physical Regions: North America shares physical regions such as the Rocky Mountains region in the USA, the Sierra Nevada mountain region in Mexico and the Great Lakes in North America

2. What is the largest bay in Canada? 3. What landform is found East of the Rocky Mountains? 4. What mountain range goes through the country of Mexico? Physical Regions: North America shares physical regions such as the Rocky Mountains region in the USA, the Sierra Nevada mountain region in Mexico and the Great Lakes in North America

7 Cultural Regions of North America
Questions: 1. What Caribbean island was settled by Spain? 2. What European country seemed to have the most land in the Americas in the 1680s? Cultural Regions of North America North America includes many cultural regions, or areas with a shared language and history. Canada and the United States have cultures that are strongly influenced by English and French settlers, as well as Native American cultures. Mexico and Central America have a culture that is influenced by Spanish settlers.

Questions: 1. What two countries share a border with Ecuador? 2. What country is the farthest East in South America? 3. What is the skinniest country in South America? 4. What is the smallest country in South America? Political Regions of South America: South America has 13 countries. The largest of them is Brazil, while the smallest is French Guiana. Some countries go to war to change their boundaries or fight over resources. Ecuador, Peru and Colombia often fight over land along their border because it is rich for mining.

10 Questions: 1. What landform is found along the Western side of South America? 2. What landform is found in the Eastern side of South America? Physical Regions: South America has many physical regions including the Andes Mountains, that run down the Western side of the continent, and the Amazon Basin that fills the Eastern part of the continent. Because of its many landforms, South America is home to thousands of kinds of animals, insects and birds.
